Nangamay Public School has recently opened in Mulgoa Rise, Glenmore Park. Welcoming its first students in Term 1 2023, the new primary school has been designed with modern teaching spaces and facilities catering for up to 420 students, with Stage 2 development being rolled out once the school approaches capacity.
Nangamay is the Darug word for ‘dream’ which forms part of the school’s motto of Dream, Strive, Achieve. In keeping with this indigenous focus, the school wanted to create a playground area that featured natural elements, native plants, earthy tones and organic shapes.
Working closely with Landscape Solutions and Richard Crookes Constructions, the Preferred Turf team delivered a striking play area design featuring a mix of low-maintenance synthetic turf and soft rubber surfacing.
Utilising Surface Designs Rosehill TPV rubber softfall, our team created fun designs in the surface including an emu, a platypus, a swan, an echidna and a kangaroo, to tie in with the recurring indigenous theme throughout the school. The area not only looks great and sparks the students’ imagination, but it also provides a safe, cushioned surface that minimises injury.
Complementing the rubber surface is an expanse of our Preferred 35mm Premium landscape grass, a high-quality, soft and practical synthetic turf ideal for high-traffic areas such as playgrounds.
As with many projects, our team was challenged to work to a very tight deadline to ensure the play area would be completed and ready for the school’s official opening in Term 1, 2023. Coordinating with multiple construction teams working on the school concurrently, our professional installation team ensured minimal disruption or inconvenience to other trades.
Our biggest challenge however was creating and installing many customised animal and footprint shapes in the rubber surfacing. Each one utilised a custom-made stencil that we had made specifically for this project. Our team spent several days precisely installing each one by hand to make sure that each element was fitted correctly into the surrounding surface.
This creative new playground allows plenty of open space for imaginative play whilst also promoting safety and linking in with the important indigenous and cultural history of the area.
A combination of synthetic turf and soft fall rubber has created an easy-care playground environment that can be enjoyed by students of all ages, with minimal ongoing maintenance required.
