Manly Adolescent Hospital provides a dedicated service for 15 to 24-year-old patients with life-limiting illnesses. Offering respite, symptom management and end-of-life care, this specialised facility is set in a peaceful part of North Head surrounded by bushland and national parks.
This peaceful environment is critical to the comfort of young patients, and the recent refurbishment of the hospital centred around creating a relaxing and inviting space, both indoors and out.
Partnering with Urban Grounds and Gardens, our team helped to deliver a natural-looking, non-slip, low-maintenance outdoor space for patients and their families to enjoy.
An organically shaped walking path set amongst native gardens required a permeable surface that complemented the surrounding plants and features, and Preferred Turf recommended our wet pour stone surfacing.
Also known as Stone Set, this eco-friendly natural stone surfacing uses resin to bind the stones together, creating a safe and accessible pathway suitable for wheelchairs and mobility aids. Whilst simple gravel pathways provide a similar appearance, their loose texture and slippery stones make them unsuitable for wheelchair users to navigate.
Permeable paving solves this issue by creating a porous solution using natural stones hand-trowelled over a permeable substrate. The seamless, textured finish has anti-slip properties and remains neat and tidy with no loose stone fragments that can disperse into the surrounding landscape.

The end result for Manly Adolescent Hospital’s outdoor space is a safe, accessible and aesthetically pleasing pathway and a cosy circular fire pit space that blends naturally into the landscape.
